European HGV Driving Bans: September & October 2026

DAJC operational reference for published HGV driving bans, weekend and holiday restrictions, seasonal route bans and key regional regimes across Europe for 1 September to 31 October 2026.

Scope and how to use this reference

This DAJC operational reference covers 1 September to 31 October 2026 and focuses on fixed, pre-published national, public-holiday, weekend, seasonal and major corridor driving restrictions that can affect a goods vehicle or combination above 3.5 tonnes.

A critical point: “vehicles above 3.5 t” does not mean every country starts its restriction at 3.5 t. The actual threshold is stated for each regime. Switzerland and Liechtenstein, for example, have restrictions reaching vehicles above 3.5 t, while many other European systems use 7.5 t or 12 t thresholds.

All times below are local time in the country or territory concerned.

This is not a substitute for road signs, exceptional-transport permits, police instructions or live traffic information. Local access restrictions, LEZ/ZFE rules, construction closures, weather measures, ADR tunnel rules, wartime measures and conditions written into an abnormal-load permit can change independently of a two-month calendar.

Quick calendar pattern

The most common dates for Sunday restrictions during this period are 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, followed by 4, 11, 18 and 25 October 2026. The applicable time window, road scope and vehicle threshold vary substantially by country.

Austria - nationwide, night and corridor restrictions

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles with trailers where the vehicle or trailer exceeds 3.5 t; goods vehicles and combinations generally above 7.5 t. Some Tyrol and night regimes have separate conditions.

Nationwide weekend restriction: Saturdays 5, 12, 19 and 26 September from 15:00 to 24:00, followed by Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 September from 00:00 to 22:00. In October: Saturdays 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 October from 15:00 to 24:00; Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October from 00:00 to 22:00; and the national holiday on 26 October from 00:00 to 22:00.

Important corridor restrictions: A4 Schwechat-Nickelsdorf on 5 September, 08:00-15:00, subject to local exemptions. Lueg/A13 transit above 7.5 t towards the Brenner: 5, 12, 19 and 26 September, 07:00-15:00. A10 Tauern: 5 September, 07:00-15:00 in the relevant directions; northbound also 12 and 19 September, 07:00-15:00. A12/A13 towards Germany or transit via Germany: 3 October, 00:00-15:00. Lueg/A13: 2 October, 07:00-22:00 and 3 October, 07:00-15:00.

Austria also has night and Tyrol-specific regimes, including A12 IG-L and sectoral restrictions. For exceptional transport, always read the movement permit together with the general restriction rules.

Bulgaria - route and holiday restrictions

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles above 12 t, including trailer/semitrailer, on selected main corridors.

The relevant network includes sections of the Trakia, Hemus and Struma motorways and associated I-1 routes in the Simitli-Kresna area. Direction can change between outbound and return peaks.

September 2026: 4 September 15:00-20:00; 5 September 09:00-14:00; 7 September 12:00-20:00 around the Unification Day weekend. Further restrictions apply 18 September 15:00-20:00 and 22 September 12:00-20:00 around Independence Day.

No comparable fixed nationwide holiday corridor restriction was identified for October 2026. Operational heat restrictions may still be imposed for very heavy vehicles and cannot be reliably placed in a calendar in advance.

Czechia - nationwide motorway and Class I road restriction

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles above 7.5 t and goods vehicles above 3.5 t towing a trailer.

Roads: motorways and Class I roads.

September 2026: Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, 13:00-22:00. Public holiday 28 September, 13:00-22:00. The summer Friday/Saturday regime ends on 31 August and therefore does not apply in September.

October 2026: Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October, 13:00-22:00. Public holiday 28 October, 13:00-22:00.

A vehicle between 3.5 and 7.5 t without a trailer is not covered by this general restriction. Statutory exemptions include specified emergency, animal, perishable-goods and disaster-response movements.

Germany - nationwide Sundays and public holidays

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles above 7.5 t and goods vehicles with trailers when carrying goods, including related empty runs.

September 2026: Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, 00:00-22:00.

October 2026: 3 October (German Unity Day), 00:00-22:00 nationwide; Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October, 00:00-22:00. On 31 October (Reformation Day), 00:00-22:00, the restriction applies only in Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia.

The summer Saturday holiday-travel restriction ends on 31 August. Standard exemptions exist for defined categories such as certain fresh food and combined transport.

Spain - route-specific and regional calendar

Spain does not have a simple nationwide Sunday HGV ban. The DGT annual resolution contains detailed restrictions by province, road, kilometre, direction and operation. Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarre operate separate traffic authorities and calendars.

Typical threshold: above 7.5 t, although individual DGT annexes may define other categories.

Important dates within this reference period include:

For Spain, DAJC strongly recommends storing restrictions as authority + road + km from/to + direction + vehicle threshold + start/end + exception set, not merely as a date.

France - nationwide weekend restriction and Île-de-France

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles and combinations above 7.5 t, subject to defined specialised-vehicle and commodity exemptions.

Nationwide rule: from Saturday or the eve of a public holiday at 22:00 until Sunday/public holiday at 22:00.

September 2026: 5-6, 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 September, each from 22:00 Saturday to 22:00 Sunday.

October 2026: 3-4, 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25 October, each 22:00-22:00. A further restriction starts on 31 October at 22:00 and continues through 1 November at 22:00, beyond the end of this reference period.

Selected A6A/A6B, A106, A6, A10, A13 and A12 sections in Île-de-France also have permanent time restrictions. Exceptional transports are subject to a separate movement regime and should not be treated as automatically covered by the general HGV exemption logic.

Greece - seasonal and holiday route restrictions

Greece uses direction- and route-specific restrictions rather than a simple nationwide Sunday ban.

September 2026: 4 September 16:00-21:00 on outbound sections listed in the annual decision; 6 September 16:00-23:00 on return sections. Through 6 September, additional Saturday/Sunday restrictions remain on selected sections around Thessaloniki, Preveza-Igoumenitsa, Ioannina-Arta-Antirrio and Thessaloniki-Kavala.

October 2026 - Ohi Day: 27 October 16:00-22:00 on outbound sections; 28 October 16:00-23:00 on return sections. The annual decision includes parts of A1, A8, A5, A7/A71 and other precisely defined corridors.

For Greece, direction and kilometre limits are operationally decisive.

Hungary - nationwide weekend and holiday ban

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles/combinations above 7.5 t.

September 2026: 5-6, 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27 September, each from 22:00 Saturday to 22:00 Sunday.

October 2026: 3-4, 10-11 and 17-18 October, 22:00-22:00. For the 23 October national holiday, the standard restriction runs from 22 October 22:00 to 23 October 22:00. A further restriction applies 24 October 22:00 to 25 October 22:00. At 22:00 on 31 October, the restriction for 1 November begins and continues beyond this article’s period.

Authorities can occasionally relax parts of a holiday restriction at short notice, so check the national association/authority shortly before departure.

Croatia - seasonal coastal routes

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles above 7.5 t; selected combinations may also be covered on particular roads.

The summer regime applies on selected coastal and access roads, particularly D8 and other D/Ž roads, through 15 September.

September 2026: Saturday 5 September 04:00-14:00; Sunday 6 September 12:00-23:00; Saturday 12 September 04:00-14:00; Sunday 13 September 12:00-23:00. Key routes include D8 Bakar-Zadar-Split-Klek-Dubrovnik-Karasovići and specified sections of D9, D21, D23, D39 and D66.

No comparable nationwide weekend calendar was identified for October 2026, although local and signed restrictions remain possible.

Switzerland - nationwide Sunday and night ban

Affected vehicles: vehicles above 3.5 t; articulated vehicles above 5 t; vehicles towing a trailer where the trailer exceeds 3.5 t.

Night restriction: every day, 22:00-05:00.

September Sundays: 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, 00:00-24:00.

October Sundays: 4, 11, 18 and 25 October, 00:00-24:00.

A special permit is required for non-exempt Sunday/night movement. Exceptional or overweight transport also requires its separate special authorisation.

Italy - nationwide calendar

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles above 7.5 t.

Scope: outside built-up areas under the 2026 ministerial calendar.

September 2026: Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, 07:00-22:00. ADR classes 1 and 7 remain under the stricter seasonal regime through 6 September: 5 September 08:00-24:00 and 6 September 00:00-24:00.

October 2026: Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October, 09:00-22:00.

Under specified documentation conditions, vehicles arriving from abroad may receive a four-hour delayed start and vehicles travelling abroad may receive a two-hour earlier end. Always check the exact conditions in the decree.

Liechtenstein - nationwide Sunday, holiday and night ban

Affected vehicles: heavy motor vehicles above 3.5 t; commercial tractors and working vehicles above 3.5 t; articulated combinations above 5 t; vehicles towing trailers above 3.5 t.

Night restriction: every day, 22:00-05:00.

September 2026: Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, all day; additionally Tuesday 8 September (Nativity of Mary), all day.

October 2026: Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October, all day.

Permits are generally reserved for urgent journeys that cannot reasonably be avoided through organisational measures or another mode of transport.

Luxembourg - directional transit ban

Affected vehicles: transit goods vehicles above 7.5 t, with or without trailer.

For traffic heading to France, the restriction generally runs from Saturday 21:30 to Sunday 21:45. For traffic heading to Germany, from Saturday 23:30 to Sunday 21:45.

This applies on the September weekends 5-6, 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27, and October weekends 3-4, 10-11, 17-18 and 24-25.

For transit towards Germany around German Unity Day, the ban starts on 2 October at 23:30 and ends on 3 October at 21:45. On 31 October, the pre-1-November restriction starts at 21:30 towards France and 23:30 towards Germany and continues beyond this article’s period.

The destination direction matters: this regime is not simply a blanket restriction on all HGV movements in Luxembourg.

Montenegro - seasonal tourist routes

Affected vehicles: goods motor vehicles above 7.5 t.

Routes: selected M-1, M-2 and M-10 tourist corridors, including Debeli Brijeg-Herceg Novi-Kotor-Tivat-Budva-Bar-Ulcinj-Sukobin; Podgorica-Sotonići-Petrovac; Podgorica-Mioska-Kolašin; and Podgorica-Cetinje-Budva.

September 2026: 1-4 September 19:00-24:00; 5-6 September 17:00-24:00; 7-11 September 19:00-24:00; 12-13 September 17:00-24:00; 14-15 September 19:00-24:00. The seasonal regime then ends.

No comparable fixed seasonal corridor calendar was identified for October.

Poland - no fixed nationwide date in September/October

Poland’s national holiday/summer restriction concerns vehicles above 12 t, but the summer component ends at the end of August and there is no public holiday in September or October 2026 that creates a normal nationwide date under this regime.

Therefore, no fixed nationwide >12 t calendar ban from the standard holiday/summer regime applies in September or October 2026. Local weight restrictions, urban zones, construction measures and special traffic orders remain relevant.

Romania - year-round DN1 plus seasonal routes

Typical threshold: 7.5 t or more on defined sections; individual orders may define their own categories.

A major year-round restriction applies on DN1 between the Bucharest/Ploiești and Brașov areas.

DN1 Otopeni-Ploiești: Monday-Thursday 06:00-22:00; Friday-Saturday 00:00-24:00; Sunday 00:00-24:00.

DN1 Ploiești-Brașov: Monday-Thursday 06:00-22:00; Friday-Saturday 00:00-01:00 and 05:00-24:00; Sunday 00:00-24:00.

Through 15 September, additional seasonal restrictions above 7.5 t apply on A2, DN22C, DN3, DN39, DN7 and other routes, typically Friday 12:00-24:00 on coastal approaches and Saturday/Sunday 06:00-20:00 or 06:00-22:00 depending on the route. The relevant September weekends are 4-6 and 11-13 September.

In October the year-round DN1 regime continues; the 15 June-15 September seasonal regime no longer applies. Romania can also impose operational heat restrictions.

Slovakia - new regime from 1 September 2026

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles above 7.5 t and goods vehicles above 3.5 t towing a trailer/semitrailer.

Roads: motorways and Class I roads. From 1 September 2026 the Sunday/public-holiday window changes to 06:00-22:00.

September 2026: Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, 06:00-22:00. 1 September is not a rest day for this regime, and 15 September was specifically removed from the 2026 rest-day treatment by legal amendment, so neither is listed here as a general Section 39 ban.

October 2026: Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October, 06:00-22:00.

Class III roads also have permanent restrictions for vehicles above 12 t, subject to local-access exceptions and signage.

Slovenia - nationwide and final seasonal weekend

Affected vehicles: goods vehicles and combinations above 7.5 t.

September 2026: 5 September is the final Saturday of the tourist-season regime: generally 08:00-13:00 on affected routes, and up to 06:00-16:00 on selected coastal corridors. Sundays 6, 13, 20 and 27 September: 08:00-22:00.

October 2026: Sundays 4, 11, 18 and 25 October: 08:00-22:00. Saturday 31 October (Reformation Day): 08:00-22:00.

A separate HGV overtaking ban above 7.5 t applies on A1 Šentilj-Koper and H4 Razdrto-Vrtojba from 05:00 to 20:00; this is operationally important but is not a driving ban.

United Kingdom - no national HGV calendar; London is different

There is no general national weekend HGV driving ban in Great Britain.

In Greater London, the London Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS) applies to HGVs above 18 t maximum gross weight on restricted roads. It controls routes rather than imposing an absolute ban on deliveries.

September and October 2026: every weekday 21:00-07:00, and from Saturday 13:00 until Monday 07:00. Normal rules also apply on bank holidays. Vehicles requiring restricted roads need the appropriate permission; the Excluded Route Network can be used under the scheme rules.

Greater London also requires the DVS/HGV Safety Permit for HGVs above 12 t; that is a separate safety-permit regime, not a calendar driving ban.

Spain: route-level planning rule

The Spanish 2026 DGT resolution is a good example of why professional HGV restriction data cannot be reduced to a country/date pair. DAJC recommends route-level modelling for Spain and similarly complex regimes such as Greece, Romania and Bulgaria.

For September and October, particularly important Spanish checks include Cádiz on 4 September; El Hierro on 24 September; the El Pilar period around 9-12 October; the Balearic Islands on 12 October; Tenerife from 28 October; and selected Madrid radial corridors on 30 October. Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarre must be checked with their respective regional authorities.

Verification methodology

DAJC prioritises sources in this order: [A] law / ministry / road authority / police; [B] national transport association or recognised international professional database; [C] secondary calendars only for cross-checking. This reference was verified on 29 August 2026 and translated/published in English on 31 August 2026.

Operational notice

DAJC provides this article as a planning aid. The carrier and driver remain responsible for checking current legislation, road signs, permits and the conditions of the specific transport. Restrictions can be amended after publication. For abnormal, oversized or overweight transport, the individual route permit, escort/police conditions and live road authority instructions take precedence.

DAJC - One transport order. One D-ID. Every step connected.
